"Local Touristing" Begins: Arnavutköy

 Istanbul continues to surprise me even after being a local citizen for 22 years; and that is what I love about this city, that although it could get really chaotic up to the point where you just want to drop everything and leave this place at once, it challenges you every single day to outgrow yourself, to find new cafes to collect more memories, to walk in different streets that are filled with different stories, to look at the same Bosphorus with a different color each time and promise yourself that this color is the most beautiful shade you've ever seen.



İstanbul, 22 sene sonunda bile beni şaşkınlığa uğratmayı başarıyor; ki bu tam olarak şehrin en sevdiğim özelliği, her ne kadar zaman zaman her şeyi bırakıp gitmenizi istecek kadar kaotik olsa da sizi her gün daha fazlası için uğraştıran, yeni kafeleriyle yeni anılar biriktirmenize olanak sağlayan, çok başka hikayelerle dolu bir sürü değişik sokakları içinde barındıran ve her Boğaz'a baktığınızda karşınızda daha önce hiç görmediğiniz renklerle sizi kucaklayan ve "işte bu en sevdiğim ton" dedirten bir şehir İstanbul.

Last weekend; we went to explore yet another jem, located on the shore of the European side; Arnavutköy. The area is perfect to understand Istanbul all together, modernity integrated with conservatism, with just the right amount of culture and oldness blending with the new and adventurous. With this post, I'd also like to introduce to you a brand new thread that you'll going to see in my blog from now on: Local Tourists, where I'll be bringing you along to my adventures in different parts of my city.

We kicked the day with a great breakfast in Rumeli, where the four of us where totally filled after finishing off dishes that filled the whole table. Then we hopped on the car to go to Arnavutköy, where we just thought we'd find a cafe and chat for the rest of the day. That only happened after a couple of hours, where we went to explore the area instead, having to stop at each doorstep because the girls wanted to take a photo in front of each -sorry guys, but for my defense, the paintings and the doors and the houses where all very pretty. We continued our stroll where we walked up hill until we could enjoy the view from the top, and had to stop for a few minutes to catch our breaths -I was regretting to have chosen boots by this time. Then, we finished our little adventure in a cute café that charged a green tea with 15 Turkish liras, haha, but with good company and a vibrating city, it was all worth it.

Arnavutköy was really remarkable with its colorful houses, narrow streets, and unique atmosphere that didn't quite feel like it belonged to Istanbul; but I guess pretty much all of the "old" parts of Istanbul are like that, I remember feeling nostalgic when strolling in Balat.

Geçen haftasonu bir başka semtini gezmeye gittik, Avrupa kıtasının sahil mahallelerinden olan Arnavutköy. Bu semt, İstanbul'u anlatan harika örneklerden biri bence; modern ve gelenekselliğin el ele olduğu, eski ve kültürün yeni ve macerayla buluştuğu bir yer. Bu postla, blogumda bundan sonra göreceğiniz bir konu başlığını da size takdim etmek istiyorum: Lokal Turistler, gezdiğim semtlerde geçirdiğim minik serüvenleri bu başlık altında paylaşıyor olacağım.

Güne, Rumeli tarafında harika bir kahvaltıyla başladık, dördümüz de masayı dolduran tabaklardan sonra tıka basa doymuştuk. Daha sonra arabaya atlayarak Arnavutköy'e geçtik, kafamızda günün geri kalanını geçireceğimiz tatlı bir kafe bulmak vardı. Bu fikri ancak birkaç saat sonra gerçekleştirebildik çünkü gelir gelmez sokaklarda gezinmeye başladık, tabii her kapının önünde durup fotoğraf çektirmek istememiz de yolculuğu biraz uzattı -erkeklere burdan bir kez daha özür diliyorum, ama kapılar ve evler ve renklerin hepsi çok fotoğraf çekilesiydi. Gezimizi, tepeye çıkana kadar sürdürdük, biraz nefesimiz kesilmişti ama semte tepeden bakmak da oldukça güzeldi -bu noktada topuklu bot tercihimden dolayı bayağı pişmandım. Daha sonra, başladığımız noktaya yakın bir yerde tatlı bir kafe bulduk, yeşil çay için 15 tl almalarına karşın hala tatlı diyebiliyorum(!), ama yanınızda sevdiğiniz insanlarla capcanlı bir şehirdeyseniz tüm bunlar katlanılabilir bir hale geliyor.

Arnavutköy gerçekten çok keyifliydi, rengarenk evleri, daracık sokakları ve İstanbul'a ait olmayan atmosferi ile; ama sanırım tüm "eski" İstanbul semtleri biraz bu hissi yaşatıyor size, Balat'ı gezerken de aynı nostaljikliği hissettiğimi hatırlıyorum.
